code::XtremeApps:: is back again for the second year running! Organized by the IT Standards Committee, this event aims to create greater awareness on the use and value of standards in programming, and cultivate programming talent and interest in Singapore. It also seeks to demonstrate that programming can be fun and exciting. This year's competition includes a new 'Junior' category targeted at children aged 12 years and below.
The Open Category of the competition requires contestants to build cool and engaging Web 2.0 mashups and Rich Internet Applications (RIA) using development tools and environments such as IBM Project Zero and Adobe AIR within a strict 24-hour timeframe.
code::XtremeApps:: 2008 Open Category is held in partnership with the National Infocomm Competition (NIC), an annual inter-school competition spearheaded by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (iDA). The competition is one of the challenges under the Polytechnic/ITE circuit of the NIC. This means that participants representing their Polytechnics or ITE can also accumulate points for the NIC.
The timeline for the competition is as follows:
The competition attracted a total of 75 participating teams comprising 211 contestants from the tertiary institutes, polytechnics, schools, as well as industry professionals. The contestants developed many interesting applications based on the competition theme 'Extreme Sports Entertainment' during the 24-hour competition held from 19-20 July at the Singapore Management University.

The Junior Category is open to children age 12 years and below as at 1 January 2008. This competition invites children to tickle their creative minds using Alice, a 3D interactive development platform, to create animated and engaging applications.
The competition attracted participation from 18 teams comprising students from 16 primary schools. The contestants developed many interesting programs centered around the competition theme "Promoting friendship through sportsmanship and fair play. United in sports while having fun".
The Judging Day of the competition was held on 27 June at the Nanyang Girls' High School where the participants presented their entries to the judges. Several representatives from the media were also there to cover the event.

The winning teams of the competition were announced at the code::XtremeApps:: 2008 prize presentation ceremony held on 12 August 2008. The teams received attractive prizes from the Guest of Honour, RADM(NS) Ronnie Tay, Chief Executive Officer, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, and Mr Robert Chew, Chairman of the ITSC.
